Club soccer begins!  Another Monday! But this is a short week, as Emma & I head to Vegas Friday for a soccer tournament. Looking forward to that. Be fun to watch them play and also to get Emma more freeway driving experience. She had a scrimmage Saturday and that was fun to see everyone. Been some time since I saw many of the parents. Lots of hugs as we reintroduce ourselves. Girls played well and the result was a 2-2 tie. Danny continues to shine with some excellent ball handling skills. She can do the spin and is fun to watch her juke out the defense. Emma didn't play that much, will be interesting to see if that was just due to scrimmage or if coach is playing her less. We'll see. Be very interesting to see how well they do in Vegas.  Emma did great driving. She is a very good driver. When talking about driving she doesn't give that air of confidence so my expectation was low but she did really well. After our soccer game we went out to dinner with a few families...

Back from Jersey

Image
Got back from Jersey late Tue night. The flight home went well and there were not many passengers so I had a row to myself, which was great. Loved that! But we took off late and then arrived 30 minutes late to LAX. I didn't get back to the house until 1am. I don't think I'll do that again. Especially when going to the office the next day. That was a little rough. The trip was great. Didn't get my Mom to Church or to Yoga but we had a great visit. We watched Sunday service together on YouTube on her TV. Sunday was beautiful so after Church we went to boardwalk and walked around and had a nice lunch. Went out to dinner a few times and one of those times was to Rosie's Cafe in Ocean Gate.   Rosie's - Ocean Gate, NJ (rosiesoceangate.com)    It was good, we went there to celebrate my Mom's 80th birthday. But I truly love L Gourmet in Beachwood.  L GOURMET    I wish this place was in CA. Never had a bad meal there.  I typically do well as far as ...

No willpower for hard candies

I seemingly don't have the willpower to stop eating candy at work. Or the desire to eat is greater than any desire to stop based on knowing it isn't great for me...tends to upset stomach after a few pieces and I know it isn't good for my teeth. Why can't I stop. Okay, try starting now! Thu 2/29...leap day at 337pm pacific. I can do this! I know I can conquer this issue. I have maybe 6 root beer barrel candies in my drawer that are calling me. I buy the bag at Smart & Final for the office but man I can plow through quite a few in an afternoon. I'm always pretty good in the morning. I read somewhere that as you tire, day goes on, your willpower weakens. Like a muscle used over time. I'm like an addict that once I have 1 I then have a hard time not having another, then another, then..... Heading to NJ Friday night so I'll be out of my element, which typically helps. So odd. But is it...not really. I think my issue is I get antsy, anxious, etc. Like right n...

Leather Jackets and Dad

Image
This jacket is in great shape for its age. The 2nd picture is one of my Dad when he was in his early 30s. I don't remember the motorcycle, but the jacket was in my parents' coat closet. I grew up going to my soccer games sitting on the back of his 1970 Harley. It was a fun way to travel and I'm sure I thought I was pretty cool. I have many traits from my Dad, and most of them are good! I definitely developed his love of motorcycle riding. I now ride a BMW F800ST that I love. I now live in CA but when I lived in Jersey I had a Yamaha 700 that was great. My Dad & I did many rides together. It was a lot of fun and a great way for us to spend some quality time together. Being a Father myself, I have learned how special it can be to share passions with your children.  My Dad has Alzheimer's disease and his riding days are behind him, but his jacket lives on! My Dad was always very generous with his time and possessions. I have fond memories of him taking my brother and...

Getting old can be painful at times

Image
The New Year's race my daughter and I participated in was great. Jacquelyn and I decided to do the 10k, since we felt ready based on our training runs. We follow a walk/run method that consists of a 5 minute walk, followed by 10 minutes of running. This method is great as we end up averaging a pretty good pace of 10-11 minutes per mile. Therefore we are breaking a sweat without killing ourselves, making the race/run more enjoyable. I love that we get to talk plenty during our runs, versus being overly focused on our split times.  The race we did on Jan 6th was more of a fun run. The atmosphere was casual and relaxed, which was perfect for us. We had a great race, and one of the highlights was going out to eat afterwards at The Original Pancake House! So, so good!!!  Only negative is that I have been experiencing pain in my left Achilles tendon on my left side. Sure maybe I have overdone the workouts for someone in their late 50s....and therefore only have myself to blame for m...

Getting back into running (Turkey Trots and New Year's runs)

Image
Hi! My name is Ron Iovino and I'm a 57 year old father, drummer, cyclist and runner. I am getting back into running after a long break. I took up cycling years back, when running started to bother my back. I have always missed running, and from time to time would go for a walk/run, often with Romeo our beloved Bichon that passed in 2020. I have grown to love cycling and found a great club (Lightning Velo out of Long Beach) that I ride with from time to time. Recently I started running more regularly and best of all, my oldest daughter is running with me. We did the 2023 Long Beach Turkey Trot, and this Saturday (1/6/24) we are doing a New Year's Eve run in Long Beach. While visiting my parents in New Jersey this past December, we ran a few times and were surprised of our distances. It is important to note that when we run, we actually walk for 5 minutes, then run for 10 minutes. This walk, run method works real well for both of us as we build up our endurance and I really enjo...
